About Us

Mukhondeni Pottery Village is a cooperative located in Mukhondeni Village in the outskirts of Elim, Limpopo province. It was established in 1974 by three women who were unemployed and trying to fight poverty and to be able to provide for their families through the crafting of pots, and exchanging them for food and clothes. One of them was Sarah Munyai who saw a need of teaching other women how to make pots. She then invited 25 other women to come work with her. This led to the growth of the pottery and women were able to provide for their families. Many community children were sustained as a result of clay pots sales and some even managed to go on to university as a result. Sarah Munyai led the women until she passed on in 2017. After her passing 5 youth joined the women in pottery and still making pots to date.
